Public transportation services in the Central Virginia Planning District Area are provided by the Greater Lynchburg Transit Company and the Altavista Community Transit System. CVTPO staff, through the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) Section 5303 Metropolitan Transportation Planning Program and program support from the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation (VDRPT), provides planning assistance services that include:
- Developing short and long-range transit development plans.
- Coordinate the use of federal transit funds within the Lynchburg urbanized area.
- System route mapping and analysis.
- Multimodal facility planning to increase pedestrian and bicycle access to transit stops and resources.
- Transit system planning and corridor and stop analysis.
The Greater Lynchburg Transit Company (GLTC) uses the Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) development process of the Central Virgnia Transportation Planning Organization (CVTPO) to satisfy the public hearing requirements of 49 U.S.C. Section 5307(b). The TIP public notice of public involvement activities and time established for public review and comment on the TIP satisfies the program-of-projects requirements of the Urbanized Area Formula Program.
